completly untrue, a native language never succeded in becomming a lingua franca, the latin failed ( only spoken by a small elit ) the french failed (only spoken by a small elite too ) and the english failed (only spoken by a small elite). I speak english with a lot of people but I have only met twice a non native speaker with good expression skill, a sloven ( the country has 2 millions people so you better have to master an other language if you wants to do somethings in life) and one of my university proffessor who spend three year in cannada.

Most of the time I met people like asp explorer ( I can watch a movie without subtitle, dam I am so good why are you so bad at english you suckers ).But people with really good expression skill ( lets say who are able to score at least 605 point at a toeic exam, niveau opérationnel de base ) almost never. Why is that so ? Because in order to be able to do this you have to spend a lot of time studying no just watching the tv.
