La mort de Bob Simon, qui était notamment célèbre aux États-Unis pour avoir été capturé avec des membres de son équipe en janvier 1991 par des forces irakiennes au début de la Guerre du golfe (un épisode qu’il n’a pas inventé, au contraire de son homologue de NBC News Brian Williams, suspendu six mois de ses fonctions et passé d’icône à paria), a ému ses confrères ainsi que les stars d’Hollywood. « J’ai toujours rêvé, et espère toujours, être au moins un quart aussi bon que Bob Simon. Bob Simon, présentateur vedette de l’émission « 60 minutes » sur la chaîne télévisée CBS et journaliste américain le plus primé, est mort mercredi soir à l’âge de 73 ans dans un accident de voiture à New York, ont annoncé la police et CBS. La voiture dont le journaliste vétéran était passager a percuté un autre véhicule. Blessé à la tête, Bob Simon a été déclaré mort à son arrivée à l’hôpital, a précisé la police.

M. Simon a reçu en cinq décennies de carrière la bagatelle de 27 Emmy Awards pour des reportages aux États-Unis et sur les conflits au Vietnam, au Liban, au Cambodge, en Irak ou en encore en Bosnie. Au début de la guerre du Golfe, en janvier 1991, il avait passé quarante jours dans les geôles du dictateur irakien Saddam Hussein après avoir été capturé avec son équipe de CBS près de la frontière entre l’Arabie saoudite et le Koweït.

Former NBC News reporter Ned Colt dies at 56

Colt, who reported around the world for the news organization, died in Boston after suffering a massive stroke.

After leaving NBC, Colt worked for the International Rescue Committee and the United Nations office helping refugees.

He joined NBC News’ London bureau in 1996 before moving to Asia in 1997 to report from Beijing and Hong Kong. He also helped to cover the Iraq war and was held captive for several days while reporting for NBC.

David Carr, who wrote about media as it intersects with business, culture and government in his Media Equation column for The New York Times, died at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital on Feb. 12, 2015. He was 58.

For the past 25 years, Carr wrote about media as it intersects with business, culture and government.

He began working at the Times in 2002 covering the magazine publishing industry for the Business section. Prior to joining the Times, Carr was a contributing writer for The Atlantic Monthly and New York Magazine. In 2000, he was the media writer for Inside.com, a web news site focusing on the business of entertainment and publishing.

Before coming to New York, Carr served as editor of the Washington City Paper, an alternative weekly in Washington D.C. for five years. From 1993 to 1995, Carr was editor of the Twin Cities Reader, a Minneapolis-based alternative weekly, and wrote a media column there as well.

On August 5, 2008, Carr’s book, “The Night of the Gun,” came out on Simon and Schuster. The book is a memoir of addiction and recovery that used reporting to fact check the past. Brian Williams, présentateur vedette de la télé américaine, suspendu six mois !

Accusé d’avoir menti, l’homme qui présente depuis 2004 le journal télévisé le plus regardé aux Etats-Unis, sur NBC News, a été suspendu pour six mois a annoncé la chaîne, mardi 10 février. Brian Williams avait annoncé dès samedi qu’il se retirait pour quelques jours de son rendez-vous télévisé quotidien, après avoir reconnu qu’il avait menti sur certains souvenirs de reportages.

Le journaliste avait affirmé qu’un hélicoptère de l’armée américaine dans lequel il voyageait en Irak en 2003 avait été attaqué au lance-roquettes. « J’ai fait une erreur en rapportant cet événement d’il y a douze ans », avait-il reconnu, précisant « j’étais dans un appareil qui suivait ».

Le pilote de l’hélicoptère visé, Joe Summerlin, cité par le New York Times, avait en effet révélé que l’appareil qui transportait Brian Williams et son équipe se trouvait à plus d’une demi-heure du sien. Il avait dû se poser en raison d’une tempête de sable.

Six months after Williams joined the program in December 2004,[2] NBC News was awarded the Peabody Award for its coverage of the Hurricane Katrina story, with the award committee stating that Williams and the NBC staff displayed the « highest levels of journalistic excellence » in their reporting.[3] In February 2015 Williams was suspended for six months from the Nightly News for « misrepresent[ing] events which occurred while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003. »[4]
