The title of this excellent essay, « Le travail : bien rare, or »mal necessaire" brings to mind the plethora of Russian proverbs which Maxime should assuredly appreciate. They are those which consistently refer to bread rising,( because of the leavening agent:yeast, of course.)

Think of work as this leavening agent in life !

I want to suggest that the term « mal necessaire » mistakenly places ’work’ in a negative category.

« Travail » is the leavening in our lives, without which it would be flat, tasteless, and dull, - like bad bread !

So do not think of ’travail’ as a necessary evil, but, rather, think of ’travail’ as that activity that elevates us, defines who we are, and separates us from the animal kingdom !
