Richard Mellon Scaife, the conservative philanthropist and owner of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, died Friday at the age of 82. The obituaries are here (AP), here (NYT) and here (Trib).
Scaife’s politics were indisputable : His support for right-wing causes « laid the foundations for America’s modern conservative movement, » as the Times notes. Nevertheless, it’s been interesting to watch some on the right wholly overlook areas where he went against the conservative grain.
For instance, remembrances at Breitbart.com, The Blaze and other conservative sites omit mention of Scaife’s support for Planned Parenthood. In 2011, he wrote an op-ed urging conservatives to oppose efforts to defund the group. He praised Planned Parenthood’s founder, Margaret Sanger, and « her dedication to making health-care and birth control services available to all Americans, especially those with low incomes, no insurance, and no other resource to medical services. »
Some conservative sites note that Scaife played a major role in the effort to impeach President Bill Clinton but omit that he later cozied up to the Clintons and even endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2008.
Certainly, Scaife’s greatest contributions were to conservative politicians — from Goldwater to Reagan — and think tanks like Heritage, Cato and American Enterprise Institute. But the support for the Clintons and Planned Parenthood (as well as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting) complicate the right’s collective memory of the so-called « founding father. »
