Parallèlement au projet du canal de Suez celui du canal de la Mer Morte... ce qui vérifie encore qu’occuper la Palestine était un projet purement colonial UK au XIX°. La région attirait des convoitises coloniales !

Histoire « L’idée a été proposée initialement par William Allen (Royal Navy officer) en 1855 dans un ouvrage appelé The Dead Sea - A new route to India (« La mer Morte, une nouvelle route vers l’Inde »). À cette époque, on ignorait que le niveau de la mer Morte était très au-dessous de celui de la Méditerranée et Allen a proposé ce canal comme une alternative au canal de Suez.

Plus tard, plusieurs ingénieurs et hommes politiques ont repris l’idée, dont Theodor Herzl dans sa nouvelle de 1902 Altneuland(2). »

Works "In 1848, Allen with Thomas Richard Heywood Thomson published, in two volumes as A Narrative of the Expedition sent by H.M.’s Government to the River Niger in 1841. In 1849 he travelled through Syria and Palestine, and published the results in two volumes (1855) as The Dead Sea, a New Route to India, with other Fragments and Gleanings in the East, in which he advocated the construction of a canal between the Mediterranean and Red Sea by the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea, and compared that route with the proposed Suez Canal.[2]"
