Adam Smith à propos de la main invisible :

"by directing that industry in such a manner as its produce may be of the greatest value, every individual intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other cases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention. (…) By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. «

Qu’en pense Joseph Stiglitz, prix Nobel d’économie en 2001 ? Constatant les crises et le chômage et les désordres macroéonomiques, il écrit :

 »… the reason that the hand may be invisible is that it is simply not there- or at least that if it is there, it is palsied".
